Parent Consultation
Many parents feel isolated, stressed, and unsure of their parenting choices. Our culture is so full of judgment and shame for parents that many parents are afraid to reach out for help and support, even when they are struggling. We at Thrive want you to know you are NOT ALONE in your parenting decisions! We are here to help, support you and come up with realistic solutions for you and your family. When you work with us at Thrive, the days where you struggle alone and feel uncertain of your path will be in your distant memory.
Working with parents is something all of the therapists at Thrive are passionate about. Parenting is one of the most complicated and challenging tasks in our lives and it can be quite overwhelming figuring out exactly what parenting approach is right for you.
Before discussing parent consultation more, we want to share a few important facts about how we work with parents at Thrive. This hopefully alleviates some fears people may have when requesting this type of service.
- We are not going to tell you that you are a “bad, terrible” parent. While we might give you some feedback, it will be done gently and with compassion. We respect the fact that parenting is an enormous task and that you are afraid of what others will think of the particular way you parent.
- We do not think we know more than you do about your child or your family. You are the expert! We know that you are going to know tons more than we do about your family and your child. What we bring to the table is years of knowledge gained from working directly with children, years of working with parents in behavioral consultation, and education around child development.
- We will not expect you to be a perfect parent. In fact, we love it when people make mistakes because that means they are trying something new and learning. Our motto at Thrive is that, “mistakes help our brains grow. We need to make mistakes!” We believe this and will not be hard on you about your parenting. Hopefully, we will help you be less hard on yourself and feel less parental guilt too!
- We will work together. We are 100% collaborative when it comes to helping your family and that means that we want your feedback and would like to hear from you about what you think will work and what you do not think you are able to do. That way we can develop a realistic plan that you feel comfortable with.
- We will work with you to develop solutions. We are very active in our work as parent consultants, developing solutions for the problems in your family and helping you understand your children better. We give direct advice and feedback in this role, which is not typical for us in our therapeutic role.
