Commitment to Inclusion
While the six-color flag remained the primary symbol, the late 1990s and 21st century saw the rise of specific identity flags (e.g., Transgender, Bisexual, Asexual) to affirm diversity within the community.
More recently, flags have evolved to be more intersectional:
- Philadelphia’s People of Color Inclusive Flag (2017) added black and brown stripes to address racism and exclusion.
- The Progress Pride Flag (2018) incorporated the Transgender Flag colors and the black/brown stripes into a chevron, symbolizing the need for forward movement and inclusion of marginalized groups.
Today, Pride Flags are not just community symbols but explicit signs of political and civic support, displayed by US government entities, corporations, and institutions during events like Pride Month, and used widely in advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights.
For clients who may have experienced invalidation in other healthcare or social environments, the flag serves as a non-verbal affirmation that their identity is understood and respected within the therapeutic relationship at Thrive Therapy Studio. It fosters immediate trust and reduces the psychological barrier to discussing sensitive issues, ultimately enabling deeper therapeutic engagement and promoting better mental health outcomes in an environment free from judgment or the need for self-censorship.
Our commitment at Thrive Therapy Studio extends far beyond symbolic representation; it is woven into the very fabric of our practice and grounded in our core values:
- Affirming: We do not just tolerate; we celebrate. We actively affirm all identities—gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and background—as inherently valid and valuable.
- Empowering: We strive to empower every client by recognizing their inherent strengths and resilience, especially in the face of systemic adversity.
- Warm, Authentic, and Genuine: We cultivate a space built on real human connection, where honesty and vulnerability are met with empathy and unconditional positive regard.
- Connected: We understand that individual well-being is inseparable from community and societal contexts, fostering therapeutic relationships that acknowledge these interconnected layers of experience.
- Client-Centered and Collaborative: Our work is driven by the client’s goals and wisdom. We partner with clients, sharing power and expertise to navigate their therapeutic journey.
- Respectful: We approach every person and their lived experience with profound respect, ensuring cultural humility guides all interactions and interventions.
- Brave: We encourage and embody bravery—the courage to face difficult truths, challenge internal and external barriers, and engage in the necessary work for healing and growth.
We stand unequivocally with all marginalized communities, recognizing that mental health is critically impacted by systems of injustice. Our practice is dedicated to actively working against discrimination and toward alleviating the effects of systemic racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, and all forms of oppression. This means continuously examining our own biases, advocating for change within our profession, and providing culturally responsive care that validates the client’s experience of marginalization. The presence of the Pride Flag is merely the beginning of our sustained commitment to justice and inclusion.
